| It was impressive because it was the second time in the seeded era of the NCAA Tournament and the first by a true midmajor team (not Atlantic 10, CUSA, Mountain West, West Coast). Very few teams could have had the luck and the ability to pull off those wins. I think of GMU's four wins, the win that was least impressive was the Sweet 16 game against Wichita State, a #7 seed who beat #2 Tennessee in the 2nd round. I dunno if Mason could have beaten Tennessee.
I don't want to go off topic, but if Tennessee beat Wichita State and then GMU in the Sweet 16, it would have pitted them in an interesting, and highly anticipated Elite Eight match with Connecticut as they would add a new fold to women's basketball's biggest rivalry. The Vols and Huskies did play once before in the 2000 NCAA tourney in the 2nd round with the Vols on top, but this one match could have brought UConn-Tennessee to a new level, especially in men's basketball with one of men's basketball's rising star coaches in Bruce Pearl (the cool coach who is okay with playing 2nd fiddle to a women's basketball team) against one of the established greats in Jim Calhoun (a coach who doesn't want to accept that despite reality and still gets his teams to the top). They will play each other next season, so that will be a very highly anticipated game. In 2006, I thought Duke was gonna win it all, but I had UConn and Tennessee in the Elite Eight, with the Vols coming through with an upset..
Still nevertheless, it's the best Cinderella run ever in the Big Dance. No All Americans, No NBA players, team that was decent in the CAA, but not so much outside of it. You can't say that about other Cinderellas. |

| I also find it impressive that George Mason was able to handle UConn and get the better of them and the other teams like UNC that they faced in the post.
beating Michigan State,UNC,and UConn in the same tourney is remarkable
in the paint is where most mid-majors struggle against powerhouses but thats where George Mason thrived
in the UConn game they even faced a 12 point deficit but showed the heart, pride, and toughness to comeback |

They made the Final Four in 2006 with a roster with no All Americans, No Coach of the Year, much less the NBA
They were an 11 seed as well. 11 seeds are good candidates to advance one round perhaps, maybe two on a good year, but not a candidate to advance four rounds.
George Mason is a state run university in Virginia about 20 miles from Washington, DC |
