On ESPN 360, Geno Auriemma answered some questions that would get us riled up in case any big job opening comes up.
In short, we learned these things:
On UConn-Tennessee women's basketball
Geno feels that if anyone is suffering from the fact that these two programs aren't playing each other, it's just the UConn and Tennessee fanbases. Besides, Geno is "sick of it", and the men's teams are resuming the rivalry next year.
On if his team's winning is bad for women's basketball
"It's bad for the other teams." I agree. UConn's dominance may look easy, but those players are working hard in practice, studying hard in school, and winning games isn't as easy as it looks.
Does Geno honestly want to coach a Division I men's team?
Yes, he said that does have the urge. He mentioned that he is 90% over the competitive urge to keep doing his best "just to keep his job". Not to say that he doesn't like coaching at UConn, but he is at a midlife crisis of sorts, and if he's gonna move, he's gotta do it rather soon. Auriemma would like a chance to coach a men's team because he wants to show everyone that he can do it and perhaps win championships since getting one or two men's titles will put a coach into "immortality", while his six titles (or seven or ten or more) may always have an asterisk on because of public opinion.
Where would he go?
He said on the record that he would like to coach at Duke if and when Coach K wants to leave, and North Carolina. He did say (but I think he's just saying it) that if Duke or UNC had a vacancy today and offered him the job, he'd take the job in a heartbeat. I think what he means that he would like to coach at a very prestigious program along the likes of UCLA, Indiana, Kentucky, etc. He ruled out coaching at UConn out of respect for Jim Calhoun and the risk of being responsible for "screwing up two programs". I can definitely understand that, not to mention that it may send the wrong message to UConn alumni and women's basketball in general if he just stayed in house and took over the house Jim Calhoun built.
What I take out of it
Well, to the head coaches of all the prestigious men's programs out there, and any major conference school with a good history looking for a home run hire. Auriemma will be willing to listen to you and may leave. I personally think it's about time for him to head on out and see what he can do in a men's program myself, though I doubt Roy Williams or Coach K are retiring or are at risk of getting terminated, though Roy better not have another .500 season (NIT is unacceptable in Chapel Hill, even if he won two titles) or perhaps the guys at UNC would really give Geno a shot.
I don't think UConn's women's program would be screwed up, especially if Geno leaves for a good men's program, AND he hand picks Jennifer Rizzotti from Hartford to take the UConn job where she has had a Top 25 team this season. Rizzotti is a UConn alum, and a National POY in 1996, so the transition will be pretty seamless. I don't see his Associate HC taking the job and his other main assistant, Shea Ralph is likely not ready for the big time either.
Your take
What do you take out of his interview? Would you want to see him at a Power conference men's program in the next couple years? I wouldn't mind seeing him at UVA (he was there right before UConn), or at Villanova where he can come back home to Philly (though UConn wouldn't want him to go to an in conference rival, and Jay Wright is a much younger man). Of course, if Duke, Kentucky, UNC, etc. have a job opening, they should also try to get with him and see what it'll take to move him away.
