| He's on the banner. I've heard of him. He made a few all-star games, right? All I wanna know is like, what was he good at? |

| He was a good leader as well as a tremendous defender. Bird said Johnson was the best player he ever layed with. o.o |

Lol yep. But that was more intended as a snipe at Kevin McHale than at DJ's skills. Don't get me wrong, he was awesome, but Bird always felt like McHale could've put in more effort than he did. |

| So Bird really just screwed McHale over by saying that, rather than saying Johnson was a manbeast? |

| He actually led the Seattle Supersonics to their only championship and was the Finals MVP.
He was an amazing defender (he could guard PG to big SF's even at 6'4") and a steady point guard.
He'd never blow you away with his stats, but he was a winner and didn't break under pressure.
You know how Bird would come up with the big shot? Well DJ would come up with the big defense play/stop.

It was about 60% snipe at McHale, 40% testament to DJ. DJ was an incredibly talented guy. But Bird had a history of saying things that sounded like compliments but were really insults to McHale. There was one time where he said, "Sometimes I think Kevin could be the best player on the team." That was a more of a subtle snipe at how McHale didn't always give 100% than how good McHale was (even though he really could've been the best guy on the C's). |

Thanks! I kinda like him now. From your explanation he's an amazing defender, especially in clutch. And CAguy: I thought Bird and McHale were butt buddies!? |

| McHale gave 100%.
That a ridiculous statement if that was suppose to be a swipe.
I think it was Bird's way of motivating McHale, but not him taking a swipe. Or saying he didn't give 100%.
Bird usually gave his backhanded compliments to opponents and was just straight forward with teammates. |

That's what my dad used to say, and what Bill Simmons reminded me of (I was flipping through his book looking at the Pyramid for ideas about the all-time draft lol). |

| @Marshy...
Hmm... I'm not gonna discredit them for their opinions... I know you know I wouldn't do that... I'm just saying I think it's ridiculous and I lived in Boston during their championship run.
Bill Simmons is one of my favorite guys to listen to on his podcast and reading his articles... It's just a strange concept to me... I've watched so many Celtics games and I've never seen McHale not bust his ass.
Any time Bird needed to say something about a teammate or his team he never sugarcoated it.
I think especially during DJ's long overdue inductance to the HOF, I don't think he'd take the time to make a swipe at McHale so many years after the fact. |
