Bruce Pearl is in hot water for misleading the NCAA in a recent investigation to men's basketball recruiting practices. After "misleading" or lying to the NCAA regarding excessive phone calls to recruits, he comes clean to the athletic director. Well, the AD and the university were pissed off, putting him on probation, in the form of not allowing him to go off campus recruiting for a year, AND docking his salary, over a million bucks a year over the next several years. Retention bonuses have also been delayed. His assistant coaches also take salary cuts of 25% this upcoming year.
Love the guy, but if I were the AD, I'd terminate him immediately without any golden parachute (no salary after his firing). I don't care if the team made an Elite Eight, the phone calls sure, they are a violation, but he LIED to save his ass to the Big Bad NCAA. Contracts should allow the University to void his deal immediately. Then again, I'm not pissed or outraged that Pearl was kept because the team's on court performance has been stellar at least for their standards, but one more screw up, LYING to the NCAA, will lead to him getting shown the door. Also, the salary cuts were definitely a message sent to him as well, but implicitly to the entire country. Coaches that commit NCAA violations will not only have less face time with recruits or phone time, but they also will have smaller pay checks, even if they still live comfortably with them.
